Supply chains entered the public conscious like never before at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Virtually everyone was impacted in some way by the major disruptions to the extraction, shipping, manufacturing, and processing of raw materials, component parts, and finished products that occurred at nearly every point in vast and complex supply chains spanning a multitude of industries. Rising tensions between the United States and China have put even further strain on global trade, especially in the emerging and critical technology sector. Taiwan plays a crucial role in global semiconductor supply chains. It is home to several prominent semiconductor companies, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which is the world's largest dedicated semiconductor foundry. Semiconductors manufactured in Taiwan are used in a wide range of applications, including consumer electronics, automotive, industrial, and more. The cutting-edge fabrication processes and advanced chip designs used by Taiwanese companies have made it a preferred choice for many global tech giants. China, too, is a key player in semiconductor supply chains, with a significant amount of cross-strait movement of raw materials and parts.
SEMI is the global industry association representing the electronics manufacturing and design supply chain. It advocates for a free and open global marketplace, leads workforce development efforts, connects members to new business opportunities in high-growth markets, nurtures pre-competitive collaboration, and helps accelerate innovation.
What is the role of SEMI in facilitating high tech supply chains? How do China and Taiwan manage the trade relationship required to keep these supply chains moving? What major shifts are occurring in these supply chains, and what is Taiwan doing to adapt to them?
